A New Direction: How Zen Discovered a Passion for Quantity Surveying
Read about how Zen achieved a higher-level degree apprenticeship
At 18, Zen had a clear vision for his future as he was set on a career in finance. While studying for his A levels, he stayed in touch with Ethan, a CYT alumnus who had completed our Pathways to Professional Careers programme the year before. His friend spoke highly of the experience, emphasising how it had transformed his career prospects. Encouraged by this, Zen decided to join the programme himself (Ethan and Zen are pictured together above).
From the start, he immersed himself in employability boosting sessions led by expert coaches. CV masterclasses, mock interviews and networking activities helped him build confidence and refine his professional skills. With each session, he felt more prepared to navigate the working world after sixth form.
Initially, Zen remained focused on finance but as he engaged with his CYT coach, Tasch, and explored the vast opportunities in the construction industry, he began to question his original plan. Recognising Zen’s logical mindset, Tasch introduced the idea of quantity surveying, an industry that blended analytical skills with dynamic and hands on work.
To give Zen a real-world perspective, Tasch arranged a meeting with a quantity surveyor who had once been in his shoes. They had also initially considered finance before transitioning into construction. The conversation was eye opening. Hearing firsthand about the role’s diverse skill set and long-term career benefits, Zen felt a spark of inspiration.
Determined to explore this path further, he attended one of our Live Vacancies Days where he connected with top employers offering apprenticeships. One of those employers was Core Five, the very company where the initial CYT alumnus he spoke to worked. They encouraged him to apply for their Higher-Level Degree Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying.
Armed with the employability skills gained from our programme, Zen tackled the application process with confidence. He successfully navigated three intensive interview rounds and secured the apprenticeship.
Now, six months into the role, Zen is thriving, proving how the right guidance and opportunities can unlock unexpected career paths
Construction Youth Trust works in local communities across London and North Kent, targeting areas with a high proportion of low-income households and significant construction and regeneration.
Our Pathways to Professional Careers programme supports students (aged 16-18) interested in pursuing professional pathways, with a priority focus on those from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups. Research shows that young people from well-off backgrounds are 80% more likely to be in a professional job. Pathways aims to level the apprenticeship playing field, helping young people overcome barriers and access rewarding higher-level and degree apprenticeship opportunities and professional careers.
